What 1in8b.one stores, where, and what it never collects.

Last updated: 2026-10-20

The short version

1in8b.one is a game about the statistics of being born. You can play it without an account. Your lives are kept in your own browser, and we do not collect what you write in the game.

What stays on your device

  • Your lives. The current life (so you can continue it), your past lives, your chosen home country and your settings are saved in your browser's local storage. They are not sent to our servers. Clearing your browser data, or using "Delete all" in the game, removes them.
  • Your own words. Lines you write in a reflection pause stay in that saved life on your device. A share card is generated in your browser.
  • Share links. A link like /play?seed=… contains only a birth code. It lets anyone be born into the same starting circumstances; it contains none of your choices or text.

What we may collect

  • Account details, if you sign in. Sign-in is optional. If you create an account we store the email address, name and sign-in method you provide, and the session data needed to keep you signed in.
  • Basic usage and device data. Page views, approximate region, browser and device type, through the analytics service configured for this site, used to understand what to improve. You can block analytics with your browser settings.
  • Server logs. Our host keeps standard request logs (IP address, time, page) for security and reliability.
  • Payments. The paid life report is charged by a third-party payment provider (Alipay or WeChat Pay through ZPAY today; cards through Stripe later). We store the order (amount, status, time) but never card or wallet details.
  • Life reports you buy. To make your report we store the replayable record of that life (its seed and the choices you made, including any short notes you wrote in a reflection pause), the report built from it, the poem and the portrait. These are kept with your account so you can open them again, and are only shown to you. To write the poem and paint the portrait we send a short description of the life (the character's name, country, age, occupation, a few life moments, and any notes you wrote in a reflection pause) to our AI provider, APIPod; it is not sent anything that identifies your account. You can ask us to delete a report at any time.

What we do not do

We do not sell personal data, show you targeted advertising, or build a profile from your in-game choices.

Third parties

  • Real-world facts and help links in the game point to organisations such as UNICEF, WHO, UNHCR and others. When you open one, that site's own privacy policy applies.
  • Hosting, analytics and (if enabled) sign-in and payment providers process data on our behalf under their own terms.

Sensitive content

The game covers death, illness, violence, suicide and substance use at realistic rates, without graphic scenes, and shows where to find help. It is intended for ages 15 and up. If you are struggling, a free helpline for your country is listed at findahelpline.com.

Your rights

You can delete your in-game data at any time from the game. If you have an account, you can ask us to access, correct, export or delete it. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR.

Children

The service is not directed to children under 15, and we do not knowingly collect their personal data.

Changes

We will update the date above when this policy changes, and note material changes on the site.
