1in 8 Billion Game
Who will you be born as?
Begin a fictional life in one of 118 countries. World Bank WDI 2024 and UNDP 2023 figures provide the setting. Game rules shape the events; your story is not a prediction.

Where a simulated life begins
Birth-weighted draws are conditional on the 118 included countries. Weights use population × crude birth rate, not direct counts of births.

What does “1 in 8 billion” mean?
In 2024 the world population passed 8.1 billion. “1 in 8 billion” is that number seen from the inside — not a dot on a chart, but the one seat you happen to occupy. If a baby born this second could be any of the roughly 4.3 births that happen every second, where would that seat be? Most probably Asia or Africa. Rarely Europe or North America. Almost never one of the small, rich countries that dominate the internet’s picture of “the world”.
This game takes the question literally. Every life starts with a birth draw over 118 countries, weighted by population and birth rate, then plays out against that country’s published reference data — schooling, income, life expectancy — while the game’s own rules shape the story. It is fiction built on public statistics, not a prediction about you.
Why you’d probably be born in India (18%), not the US (2.8%)
Every draw weight comes from one formula: a country’s population multiplied by its crude birth rate. India — about 1.45 billion people with a birth rate near 13 per 1,000 — multiplies out to the largest weight in the set, about 18% of simulated births within the 118 covered countries. The United States is far richer per person, but with 340 million people and a birth rate around 11 per 1,000 it lands at 2.8%. China’s share (7.4%) is well below its population share because its birth rate is low; Nigeria’s (5.9%) is far above its population share because its birth rate is high. Where babies are born follows where people of child-bearing age live and how many children they have — not how rich a country is. Wealth shows up later, in how long those babies live and what they can afford.
One life, start to finish
Begin a fictional life, make choices and follow its story to the end. Chance and game rules shape what happens.
- 1
Be born
Draw from 118 included countries, weighted by estimated births or population. Family, sex and wealth use separate game rules.
- 2
Live
Each year is a tick. Pick a focus, manage money and health, and watch life unfold in a record.
- 3
Decide
At story turning points, pause to choose a path in education, work, relationships or migration. Options simplify local conditions.
- 4
End
A simplified mortality model shapes when the story ends. Country averages are reference points, not official life tables or a forecast for one person.
Built to be felt, not won
Public country statistics set the scene. Fictional events and game assumptions tell each life story.
Dated country references
118 countries, using WDI 2024 indicators and UNDP 2023 schooling data. See the sources, missing values and model limits on the world page.
Four fictional peers
Four simulated lives begin alongside yours. Their stories offer different paths through the same game rules.
Share a birth
Every birth has a code. Send the link and a friend is born as the same baby, then compare what you each did.
Choices that matter, not all
School, work, love, moving abroad, treatment. Effort changes a life, but it cannot fully escape the place you were born.
Private by design
No sign-up, no tracking of your lives. Your past lives stay in your browser.
Handled with care
Stories can include death, illness, poverty and conflict, without graphic detail. Soft mode reduces some distressing story content. Event rates are game assumptions.
The data behind each life
Country settings come from public statistics: population, crude birth rate, life expectancy, under-five mortality, GDP per person (PPP) and Gini from the World Bank World Development Indicators (2024 series); mean and expected schooling from the UNDP Human Development Report (2023 series); the worldwide births-per-second average from UN World Population Prospects. Life events, costs, careers and the mortality model are the game’s own assumptions — fiction, not measured personal probabilities. Every country page lists its indicators with reference years and a link to the source series.
An independent game
1 in 8 Billion is an independent, free life-simulation game. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or an official site of any other game or website with a similar name. The engine, the 118-country data set, the writing and the design here are this project’s own work. If you came looking for a different site with a similar name — you are still welcome to be born here.
Questions
A few things people ask first.
Where will you be born?
It takes between six and thirty minutes to live a life. You can pause any time.
